Powerful Pitching and Potent Pokes
Yankees 4, Braves 2

Rivera at Riviera

Posted by The Scoredad on March 13th, 2010

The third week of Riviera baseball finally brought the sunshine and good weather we love in southern California. And the Yankees enjoyed it a lot. The visiting Braves were in first place and looking to stay there, but both teams were sending their thunder to defend the pitching mound. Jordan started for the Yankees and with a two hopper to Drew, a fly out to Max in center and a 3 pitch strikeout, the Yankees were back in their dugout before the fans were all seated. Mike started things for the Yankees with a one out walk and Jordan follows by nailing an 0-1 pitch through the 3-4 hole into right for a hit that moves Mike over to third. A wild pitch allows Mike to take home and Jordan to second. Max lines a beauty deep into right center and drives in Jordan with a sweet triple. Braves pitcher Ian closed out with a strikeout and a groundout to strand Max, but the Yanks led after one 2-0.

Both pitchers clamped down in the second as the Braves grounded out to Drew again, struck out and Jordan grabbed a comebacker while the Yanks struck out. Jordy answered by striking out the side in the third inning. With one out Jake takes an inside pitch and turns it into a nice single to left. Mike likes his first pitch taking it into the gap in right to the fence. He hustles around the diamond and with a sweeping slide has an inside the park home run. Max draws a two out walk, but at the end of three the Yankees have a 4-0 lead.

Jordan grabbed another comebacker and struck out two in the fourth and Braves reliever Daniel allowed a leadoff walk to Brandon and a base hit to Ethan putting runners on the corners, but striking out the side meant a shutout inning. Jonathan led off the fifth for the Braves smacking one down into the corner in right field for a triple. Kyle put down a nice bunt that Mike came out from behind the plate to grab, but his diving tag attempt to get Jonathan was called safe. Jordy gets a strikeout, but the next batter puts one down the first base line to bring the tying run to the plate. A double steal brought in a run so after another comebacker and another strikeout the score stood at Yankees 4 Braves 2. Daniel got the Yankees 3up3down and the Braves had one more chance. Jake came in as the Yankee closer and just like he did in the first two innings Drew converted yet another sharp grounder for the first out. The top of the Braves order both hit high choppers that Jake went vertical to pull down and shut them down. A 75 minute pitching clinic and excellent entertainment.

Yankee Yogis:

Besides wrapping things up so well on the mound Jake sparked the third inning with his base hit that came around to score what would be the winning run. The Energizer again posted a zero ERA to collect a Big Unit Award to go with his Game Ball Award from Coach Tony.

Handling things well behind the dish, Mike handled things at the plate even better. His walk started the ball rolling in the first inning and his homer in the third was the Big Mac in the Saturday Combo Meal. A Game High 2 runs and 2 ribbies put the Duke game face on the leader board. He saw his first strikeout of the season, so he will make do with the Bambino Award today.

Jordan was the Riviera version of Mariano Rivera today as he dominated on the hill. Allowing one earned run in 5 innings from 3 hits and two walks meant Jordy had solid defense backing him up. It also meant he has the Yankee record this season with 9 strikeouts in the game. Hit the ball hard both times at bat scoring a run on his hit in the first. Definitely a Big Unit Award and a Game Ball Award from the Coach.

Max was the cleanup guy today. After his clean catch in center, he came up in the bottom of the inning with his shot in the gap for a rbi triple. He drew a walk in the third inning to secure his slot on the leader board and his Perfect Pinstripe Award.

Drew saw plenty of action on the right side of the infield today. The Money recorded the first out in three different innings over there playing 2B.

Brandon was even busier at first with 5 putouts. Aerosmith led off the fourth inning with a walk to keep his name on the leader boards.

Griffin drew a walk in the second and swiped second to get in scoring position. The Ninja took the count full in the fourth, but also saw some tough stuff at the plate.

Ethan had that fifth inning hit to right that put runners on the corners with two outs. We left the Ferrari parked on first, though.

As of Saturday ten games have been played in the Majors and all 6 teams have won at least one game. And they have all lost at least one game. That is balanced. So there is a good chance the team with the best spirit and chemistry in the dugout will find success. There is an even better chance they will have the most fun while looking for it. Thanks again to the Coaches and to the ground crew Dad team of Greg H. and David K. The fans are very entertained. Thursday we are visitors against the Pirates. Next Saturday we are, too. That is spooky and balanced. See you there.
