Bulldogs Nearly Upset Champs! Fans Upset As Well!

Madrona 43, Calle Bulldogs 41

A Tough Break

Posted by The Scoredad on February 27th, 2012

The playoffs are here and the Bulldogs showed up big time. The boys played some of their best basketball ever and took the undefeated Madrona team down to the wire. The 0.3 second wire. Even LA Laker Derek Fisher needed 0.4 seconds for his miracle shot.

The fun got off to a very quick start as Duke picked up his first foul and #30 for Madrona hit a three pointer in the first 45 seconds. Before another 45 seconds had gone by, Garrett fed Ryan for a payback bucket. But two minutes into the game the Mads had scored twice more and had a 7-2 lead to prompt a timeout by Coach Mike. Soon Duke fed Tanner near the free throw line and Tanner hits his shot while being fouled. He converts for his 3 point play and it's 7-5. But #30 stayed hot and it was quickly 11-5. Again Duke finds Tanner at the free throw line and again Tanner hits it to pull back within 4. Again the Mads hit consecutive buckets to pull ahead 15-7. Trevor sinks a beauty and Nick hits his first 3 point attempt to make it 15-12; but Madrona hits the offensive glass hard and after 4 consecutive offensive rebounds Duke commits another foul under the basket. They hit one free throw and take advantage of a turnover for another basket. Duke finds Nick for the final basket of the quarter and the Mads lead 14-18.

Nick did not hit his free throw for the 3 point play, but George grabbed the rebound, flipped to Tanner and it was 16-18. The Mads score and Trevor answers by driving toward the basket and nicely laying one in left-handed. Tanner is fouled in the act and sinks one of his free throws to bring the Bulldogs within one. The next trip down Tanner puts back an offensive board to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 21-20. With about 6 minutes left in the half the Mads bang 3 more offensive boards to get their own putback and regain the lead. Trevor does the same thing for us and the Bulldog lead is 23-22. With 5 minutes on the clock, #30 puts in a nice reverse layup to see saw the lead back to Madrona. With a couple of minutes remaining #30 grabs an offensive rebound and lays it back in for a 3 point lead and the half ends with the score 26-23.

The second half begins with #48 jumping high for an offensive board and putting it back in mid-air for some style points while he is fouled. He makes his free throw and when the Mads snag the inbound pass for an easy layup they have their biggest lead at 31-23. Duke picks up his fourth foul with 16 minutes left, but Nick hits from the top of the key to pull within 6. The teams exchange free throws with Ryan sinking one and with 12:30 left George puts back an offensive board to make it 28-32. #30 hits yet again and Tanner is fouled in the act of shooting and sinks both from the charity stripe: 30-34. #30 drives the lane again and this time Duke fouls out of the game. 30-35. Both teams swap turnovers and misses until at 3:30 Trevor misses a free throw, but gets his own rebound and feeds out to Nick who buries a 3. We foul, they miss and Trevor finds Ryan who sinks a 9 footer to tie the game at 35. Hokey smokes. A minute and a half remain and #44 puts a very hard foul on Ryan in the act of shooting. Ryan shakes it off and sinks both his free throws to put the Bulldogs ahead 37-35. A Mads turnover and Trevor wings a baseball pass to Tanner who drives in for a layup and a 39-35 lead. With 1:09 left it is again Calle ball and after a couple of frantic turnovers, Tanner appears to tie them up for a jump ball. But not a jump ball; rather a foul and the Mads are in the bonus for a one and one. They sink them both and it is 39-37. They quickly foul Nick with 47 seconds left and he makes one to make it 40-37. With 30 seconds left #40 comes down and hits a long 3 pointer after missing his first 9 shots of the game. Wow; 40-40. Trevor drives the lane and with 24 seconds left the Mads are called for a blocking foul. Trevor sinks one from the line and the Bulldogs lead 41-40. With 18 seconds left, #30 drives the lane and gets the call for a shooting foul. He makes one of two and it is 41-41. Yikes. We inbound the ball and it looks like Nick is fouled, but the call is out of bounds on the Mads. Again we inbound and this time it looks like Trevor is fouled, but the call goes against the Bulldogs. It is pandemonium in the stands and when Coach Mike passes along his opinion, the clock is stopped with 0.3 seconds and 2 technical shots are awarded to Mads. #41 cooly sinks them both and the upset has been upended. For now.

Garrett was scoreless, but pulled down 2 offensive boards, one on the defensive end and had that nice assist early in the game.

George had that good putback bucket in the second half and also had an assist. He grabbed 2 offensive rebounds and led the team with 3 steals.

Max only took one shot, but he also had 2 rebounds.

Duke could not peel the lid off the basket in this one, but he grabbed a couple of rebounds, got a steal and led the team with 5 assists.

Nick was very efficient with 2for3 shooting and 2for4 from beyond the arc for 10 points and had 4 rebounds and a steal.

Ryan was another big contributor going 2for4 and then 3for4 from the free throw line including those clutch two late in the game. Six big rebounds to lead the team and birthday cupcakes to boot.

Tanner was the big dog leading the team with 13 points on 5for11 shooting and a perfect 3for3 from the line. Five rebounds to go with his blocked shot and a couple of steals as well.

Trevor was red hot out of the gate and finished with 7 points on 3for5 shooting and a free throw. He pulled down 4 rebounds and chalked up 3 assists.

The Madrona scoring was concentrated between #30 who had 17 points and #48 who hit his first three baskets and had 9. While they were much less accurate, they took 7 more shots inside the arc and 8 more shots outside the arc than the Bulldogs. They were able to do that because they got 24 offensive rebounds compared to 12 for the Dogs. Turnovers, steals, fouls all about even, although Mads blocked 6 shots to one for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had heart, hustle, heroics. Everything but a happy ending. No problem. Back next week for the final consolation game at 5:30. We have high hopes.
